Viva Florida 500

Viva Florida 500 is a statewide initiative led by the Florida Department of State, under the leadership of Governor Rick Scott, to highlight the 500 years of historic people, places and events in present-day Florida since the arrival of Juan Ponce de León to the land he named La Florida in 1513.

While Florida’s Native American heritage dates back more than 12,000 years, Spain’s claim in 1513 began a new era.  In 2013, Florida will mark 500 years of history and diverse cultural heritage – a claim no other state in America can make – and promote the place where the world’s cultures began to unite and transform into the great nation we know today as the United States of America.

Viva Florida 500 will take place year-round in 2013, and its many partners are planning more than 200 events statewide. The goal is to promote 500 years of Florida’s history – its people, places and cultural achievements – and this important milestone in American and Florida history. Winter Is The Warmest Season
Most people think summer is the warmest season. This story, however, is brimming with evidence to the contrary–from roaring fires to grilled cheese sandwiches to toasty flannel pajamas. A unique twist on the traditional wintertime picture book, the beautiful visual narrative follows a boy and his family though a day of hot breakfasts, steaming afternoon cocoa, and a festive candlelit party before bed. With its inviting scenes, poetic text, and gorgeous illustrations, Winter Is the Warmest Season celebrates all the wonderful things that make winter the coziest time of the year.  Tumblebooks–online books for children…. http://tinyurl.com/bke896f

January 18–Winnie the Pooh Day

what-day-is-it

A.A. Milne created a series of books about Winnie the Pooh, his son Christopher Robin, and their friends in the 100-Acre-Wood.
Winnie the Pooh Day was created to celebrate the birth of A.A. Milne on January 18, 1882.
During the first World War, troops from Winnipeg were being transported to eastern Canada on their way to Europe. When the train stopped in Ontario,  Lt. Harry Colebourn bought a small female black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed its mother.    He named her “Winnipeg”, after his hometown or “Winnie” for short.

Winnie became the mascot of the Brigade and went to Britain with the unit.  After the war, Winnie went to the London Zoo where she lived until 1934.

Music and Early Literacy

How does singing help teach children early literacy skills?

  • Our brains are uniquely wired to respond to music, from before the time we are born.
  • Because singing is interactive, it involves even the youngest children in language.
  • Children learn language through repetition, and as songs are repeated the rhythm of the words is internalized.
  • Singing brings a natural awareness of words, as each syllable or sound in a word gets a different note.
  • Nursery rhymes and finger plays present a wide vocabulary, and teach sentence structure, story concepts and comprehension.
  • The only things we remember word-for-word from our childhoods, are childhood songs and some rhymes!
